Your Questions, Answered
A few helpful things to know about our process, pricing, and what it’s like to work together.
ABOUT CULTIVATING WILD
-
We design with you, not just for you, and we stay in the picture as your garden grows. Rather than handing over a plan and disappearing, we build ongoing relationships with our clients, offering guidance through installation and beyond so the space keeps evolving with your land and your life.
-
We lean heavily native and regionally appropriate, but we're not purists. Every design considers pollinator support, soil health, and long-term resilience, and we'll always tell you when a plant choice serves the ecology of your yard versus just the aesthetic. If you're hoping for a garden that gives back to the birds, bees, and soil as much as it gives to you, you're in the right place.
-
We're based in Midcoast Maine and take on landscape design, planting design, and installation projects throughout the region. Sites more than 30 minutes from our office are subject to a $100 travel fee, which is applied toward your design fees.
-
Cultivating Wild is led by Melissa Keyser, a landscape designer with a background as a naturalist. Melissa blends ecological and aesthetic design principles to create gardens that pull people outside and into a relationship with the land right outside their door.
IS CULTIVATING WILD RIGHT FOR ME?
-
Cultivating Wild works best with homeowners who want a thoughtful, ecological garden rather than an instant makeover—people who value native plants, pollinators, edible gardens, or long-term stewardship. Whether you're overwhelmed and don't know where to start, or you're ready to move forward and just want a sounding board, we're set up to meet you there. If you're ready to invest, participate in the process, and build a relationship that continues past the first project, that's exactly who we love working with.
-
Not really, and we'll say that plainly. Cultivating Wild isn't the right fit if you're after a transactional, purely cosmetic, one-and-done landscaping job. Our whole approach is built around collaboration and long-term stewardship, not a fast makeover. If that's what you're after, we're happy to point you toward a service better suited to it.
-
No. We don't do conventional lawn installation, mowing, or snow removal. Our focus is ecological design, planting, and personalized guidance that helps a connect with your land.
-
Yes, that's actually who we love working with most. Whether you're staring at an overgrown yard, a blank slate, or a space that just doesn't fit your life anymore, our whole process is designed to help you slow down, see the potential, and move forward with a plan that actually makes sense.
PROCESS & PRICING
-
It starts with a complimentary phone call to talk through your property and goals, followed (for most projects) by an in-person site visit and estimate. From there, you'll receive a design proposal, and once it's signed, we return for detailed site analysis, sketch concept designs, and refine everything into a final, to-scale plan with layout, planting, and materials guidance. You can read the full design process for a closer look at each step.
-
Design fees start at $1,000 and depend on the size and complexity of your project. A signed contract and 50% deposit reserves your spot in our design calendar, with additional payments made throughout the design process.
-
Every project timeline is a little different depending on scope, but your design proposal will include a projected timeline specific to your property, so you'll always know what to expect before signing on.
In general, you can expect the process to take about a month.
-
Both. We source plants from trusted local growers and install them ourselves. For hardscaping, masonry, or other built features, you'll hire local contractors directly, and we're happy to help gather bids, coordinate schedules, and provide aesthetic oversight so the finished project matches the design.
-
We stay in the picture. Many clients want ongoing guidance as the garden grows — think maintenance visits, contractor coordination, plant shopping, or seasonal check-ins — and we offer optional hourly support and coaching sessions for exactly that. Gardens change over time, and we like being part of that story past the first season.
-
For estimates, sites beyond 30 minutes from our office carry a $100 travel fee, which is then applied toward your design fees. Additional fees may be applied to projects for existing clients, depending on location.
GARDEN CONSULTATIONS & COACHING
-
Think of it as meeting your new garden confidant and ally: we walk your space together in person, talk through challenges, brainstorm solutions, and share initial ideas and design concepts on the spot. If you're considering a full landscape or planting design down the road, we'll also walk you through that process and provide an estimate.
-
Consultations start at $200 for a 60–90 minute session, with additional time billed at $100 per hour. Depending on your location, additional travel fees may apply.
-
A consultation is a single focused visit to answer questions and point you in the right direction. This is a good option if you already have a garden or are an avid DIYer.
A full landscape or planting design goes much deeper. Expect a detailed site analysis, concept sketches, and a final scaled plan with planting and materials guidance you (or your contractor) can build from. Learn more about our service offerings.
-
Garden coaching is hands-on education for homeowners who want to be more involved in their own space. We work alongside you teaching planting, pruning, weeding, design, maintenance, and plant selection, so you build real skills and confidence in your own garden. Coaching packages start at $500.
